Abstract

3985. Rainey, P. M. March 26,1914, [Convention date]. Synchronous movements.-In a method of synchronizing the distributors used in multiplex working of type-printing telegraphs, in which positive and negative impulses are used for signalling, the use of special synchronizing- impulses is avoided by arranging that synchronism is corrected, if necessary, at each change in polarity of the signalling-impulses. The invention is shown applied to the control of an electromagnetically-operated tuning-fork 7 which drives a phonic wheel motor 4 in known manner. The fork 7 normally vibrates slightly slower than the corresponding fork at the transmitting-station ; but when the magnet 24 is energized, its speed is increased so that the motor 4 is driven faster. The signalling-impulses are received by a relay 2 controlling a relay 14, the connexions of these relays being such that, when the polarity of the impulses received by the relay 2 changes, the battery 11 is momentarily connected through the armatures 10, 21 to a segment 31 on the distributor. If the synchronism is perfect, no current passes, but if the motor 4 lags, the segment 31 is connected by the distributor brushes to one of several contacts connected by a wire 27 to the right-hand winding of an unbiassed relay 22, which energizes the magnet 24, thus speeding-up the fork 7. The motor 4 then runs slightly fast until its distributor arm leads that at the transmitting-station. On the next change in polarity of the signalling-impulses, the battery 11 is momentarily connected through the armatures 10, 21 and segment 31 to one of the contacts connected by wire 26 to the left-hand winding of relay 22, which de-energizes the magnet 24 so as to slow down the fork 7.
