Limbs, artificial.-An artificial ankle, without joints, tendons, or pivots, comprises a resilient pneumatic or rubber block c which is positioned and subjected to varying initial compression by one or more bolts e'. The bolts slide freely in the space provided by the slot g when the block is compressed by the weight of the body acting on the limb or when any change in the compression occurs due to walking movements. The angle that the foot makes with the leg can be varied by inserting wedge-shaped blocks of rubber, leather, or wood between the upper surface of the block c and the metal strap d at the bottom of the leg. Fig. 5 shows a slightly modified construction for amputations close to, or through, the ankle. A comparatively thin pad h is placed between the stump and the strap d, and the bolts e<1> are formed with flat heads at the upper end. A sliding guidepin m may be used in addition to the bolts e<1>, to assist in positioning the foot.
