9793. Smith, G. T. July 5. Processes for reduction of grain.-Consists in removing fibrous impurities, crease-dirt, and ergot from flour during manufacture, by passing the chop from each break through a grader in which the material moving in a thin layer along a sieve is exposed to a distributed current of air passing across, but not through, the sieve. The grader consists of longitudinally reciprocated cloth screens 8, 13, 15, in contact with the under surface of which work transversely reciprocating brushes 9, 12. Air is drawn into the trunk 5 through openings 4 regulated by valves, the air entering casing 1 through slots 25, and its distribution over the sieve being secured by baffles 26. Flour is discharged from the shoot 18, and the intermediate products pass to the second break rolls, chop rolls, or middling rolls, or to other graders arranged below that shown, the crease-dirt &c. being collected as a by-product. Some of the material carried up by the air blast is deposited in the pockets 27, the amount of the deposit serving to indicate when the air current is correctly adjusted.
