[Published under Section 91 of the Act.] Operating friction wheels.-In a device for stopping or retarding a machine or motor, driving or driven through friction gear 4, 5, the application of a brake is arranged to effectdisengagment of the friction wheels by displacing the wheel to which the brake is applied. In the arrangement shown, the driven wheel 5 is displaced in its bearings when the brake block 6 is applied by the toggle action of a link 8 and a lever 10 operated by the treadle 13. The brake can be applied lightly and without displacing the wheel by the treadle 16 pivoted at 14 and bearing upon a spring 17.
