The connection between the brake lever and the slide is preferably also a slot and pin one, lf the slide 17 is moved downwardly from the nor mal position` shown in the drawings by means of a. cord or chain 20, it first closes the switch 16 and then progressively decreases the effectiveness of the brake 15 on the motor, permitting the motor to run at any speedtdcsired up to its maximum. If the spring 22 is compressed so as'to gradually relieve the pressure between the friction-- plates, the'braking eii'ect on'- the motor is gradually reduced, permitting a gradual increase in speed -until :maximum speed` is reached.

The spring 23 then moves Slide 17 so as to change the angle of pull of spring 43, and causes it to move switch arm 42 into the position in which the circuit between contacts 40 is opened. The lower ends of the slots 37 and 36 in the slide in this po- `sition engage the pins 38 and 35, respectively. The slide is shown as bei-ng provided with suitable stop pins 46 and 47 for'bringmg the .slide into positive engagement with the switch lever 42 when in either of its extreme positions.

What I'claim as new and desirefto secure :by Letters Patent of the United States, is
` 1. The ombination with a machine to be driven, of an electric motor adapted to drive the same, and m'eans for controlling said motor comprising a switch yfor the motor supply circuit, 'a friction brake for said motor, a brake lever operatively 'connected with said brake, a slide having a slot and pin connection with the motor frame and opera- 'tively'connected with said switch and said brake lever, said slide being adapted to move in a substantially 'straight line', and means for actuating said slide'to close said switch and progressively release said brake.
2. The combination with a machine to be driven, of an electric motor adapted to drive;
