Abstract

9563. Caddy, S. C. June 30. [Cognate Application, 11,030/15] Projectile fuses.-Consists mainly in the use of a spring striker provided with a transverse pin balanced over the tops of two diametrically opposite tapered projectiles, from which it is dislodged positively or by concussion to release the striker. In the form shown, the spring striker d is located partly within a tube f which passes through the body a of a projectile, the upper end of the striker passing between two fixed supports h, which have notches in their ends so as normally to retain the striker in the cocked position shown, by engagement with a transverse pin g. The tube f contains a detonating-cartridge b which rests upon a tube k fitting into the lower part of the tube f. Upon impact, the pin g is shaken off its supports and slides down the inclined upper edges of the parts h into a slot between them, so that the striker d is freed and thrown by its spring e against the detonating-cartridge, the explosion being transmitted to the explosive in the projectile a through holes in the tubes k, f. In a modification, the striker is released by the blow of a spring hammer released by clockwork. The Provisional Specification 9563/15 also describes the use of a breakable transverse pin for the striker. The Provisional Specification 11.030 also describes a pair of spring dash-pots adapted to be released by a pair of spring arms and a clip; one dash-pot removes the locking-pin of the striker, and the other subsequently releases a spring hammer which gives a blow to the striker to cause its release.
