Peat, preparing.-Liquid is expressed from peat by first applying a pressure of, say, 1000 lb. per sq. in., then passing steam, hot air, or other gaseous fluid through the material in the press, and finally applying a pressure of, say, 1500 lb. During the passage of steam &c., the pressure may remain at 1000 lb., or be reduced, say, to 200 lb. or zero, or be increased. The final product, if powdered and dropped through the air, loses further moisture, but the cakes may be used as such or carbonized to obtain by-products. In order that the peat may comprise a substantial quantity of fibre, a mixture of upper and lower bog is used. The press is provided with means for passing the steam &c. through the peat in a direction at right-angles to the movement of the piston. It comprises cylinders 5, 5<1>, annular pistons 4, 4<1>, 4", and cylinder walls with drainage grooves 5<a> covered by strainers and leading to discharge pipes 33, 34. Steam &c. is admitted through a pipe 29 connected by screwed caps 12' to a hollow ring 24 and a pipe 11, which have perforated tops covered by strainers secured by caps 28, 13. The ring and pipe also serve for discharging liquid. To equalize the pressure the cylinder 5<1> and preferably the ring 24 are not carried up to the press-head 9<1> between which and the cylinders may be provided a cover running on rails. A simpler form of press having a single cylinder, piston and tube 11 is described. Specification 24,819/11, [Class 87, Moulding &c.], is referred to.
