Abstract

3092. Langstaff, W. Feb. 26. Aerial machines without aerostats; propelling.- In flying-machines having the axis of the propellers disposed parallel to the direction of flight and provided with cam mechanism to cause the blades to travel more quickly during the downward than during the upward stroke, the blades are mounted at one end on shafts grouped together near the centre of rotation. The propellers may impart both a lifting and traversing effort, in which case they are formed with a screw pitch. In the arrangement shown in end elevation in Fig. 2 and in plan in Fig. 3, the blades a are mounted on spindles b, the ends of which are carried by toothed wheels c on a hub d. The cams g are fixed to the framework and engaged by rollers f carried by the spindles b. The propellers are driven from the engines n through shafts m. Ordinary propellers q may also be provided, driven from the shafts m or from independent engines t, and clutches may be provided whereby all the engines can drive either set of propellers.
