Abstract

2859. Middleditch, H. A. W. Feb. 22 Mines, marine; laying mines.-Consists in making the mine in the fcrm of a ring large enough for the bow of a submarine vessel to enter. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, a ring a made in sections bolted together carries an air chamber b and explosive chambers e, and is anchored by two anchors and chains g, h. The chambers are attached to the ring by bolts d, and the plugs f for firing the mine when struck are arranged within the ring, so that a surface ship cannot strike them, and only the entrance of the bow A of a submarine vessel into the ring can cause the mine to explode. The explosive chambers may be put at the upper part of the ring with the plugs f outside for use against surface ships. For laying these mines, a platform and a derrick are provided at the stern of the mine-laying vessel.
