Abstract

2272. Taylor, A. H. Feb. 12. Steering-gear and steering.-In vehicles of the kind which cam be steered and controlled from either end. the ordinary front steering- column and a steering-device at the rear are connected directly together by gearing on the front column and on a longitudinal shaft. In the arrangement shown, the steering-column 1 is geared to a steering-column G, on a suitable platform, through the longitudinal shaft H. The vehicle may be fitted at the rear with suitable pedals, levers, &c., for controlling the various parts, such as the brakes, clutches. speed gear, and ignition. In a modification, the rear steering-column G is dispensed with, and the shaft H is provided with a handwheel beneath the rear end of the vehicle, to enable the driver to guide the vehicle while walking on the ground.
