Abstract

1,194,744. Motor vehicle steering mechanism. MASSEY - FERGUSON - PERKINS Ltd. 29 Oct., 1968 [29 Nov., 1967], No. 54256/67. Heading B7H. In a motor vehicle having front and rear wheels 2, 2<SP>1</SP> and 3, 3<SP>1</SP> steered by respective pairs of hydraulic rams 9, 9<SP>1</SP> and 10, 10<SP>1</SP> controlled by a steering valve 22 operable by the driver, a selector valve 27 for isolating the rams 9, 9<SP>1</SP> when it is desired to steer the rear wheels only is interlocked with a high/low range transmission control lever 50 to prevent use of four wheel steering and a high range transmission ratio at the same time. Further interlock means 54 are provided for preventing isolation of the rams 9, 9<SP>1</SP> unless the front wheels 2, 2<SP>1</SP> are in the straightahead position. The steering valve 22 is actuated from a steering wheel 19 through steering gear 19a, and a follow-up linkage 24, 25 connects the valve housing and a rear wheel track rod 13. Fluid from a pressure source comprising an engine-driven pump 20, unloading valve 20a and a reservoir 32 is directed by the steering valve 22 to the selector valve 27 which either supplies both pairs of rams 9, 9<SP>1</SP> and 10, 10<SP>1</SP> in series or supplies the rams 10, 10<SP>1</SP> only, the rams 9, 9<SP>1</SP> being hydraulically locked. The transmission control lever 50 is linked through a rod 51 to a gear-box 15 connecting an engine 14 to the front and rear wheels through shafts 16 and differential gears 17, 18. Lost motion connecting means 53 between the selector valve 27 and a crank arm 52 on the lever 50 is arranged such that movement of the selector valve to the four wheel steering position is either prevented if the lever 50 occupies the high range position or causes simultaneous movement of the lever out of the high range position. The interlock means 54 is actuated by a front wheel track rod 12 and prevents both movement of the selector valve 27 from the four wheel steering position and movement of the lever 50 into the high range position if the front wheels occupy other than the straight-ahead position. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), both the front and the rear wheels are separately steerable. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), follow up is provided by metering the fluid flow to the steering rams and provision is made for crabwise steering of the front and rear wheels.
