Abstract
523,957. Motor-vehicle steering-gear. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., SIMPSON, C. M., and BLAGDEN, W. M. Jan. 17, 1939, No. 1535. [Class 79 (v)] In steering gear in which the front and rear wheels are progressively steered by means of a laterally-displaceable rocking lever connected at its opposite ends respectively to the front and rear road wheels and operating in conjunction with a fixed guide plate, the rocking lever is connected to the steering shaft or column by gearing trains, such as bevel and worm, so arranged that the steering hand wheel turns through the usual angle to steer the front wheels only, further movement of the steering wheel being only necessary when it is desired to steer the rear wheels as well. In the construction shown the steering shaft 10 drives a horizontal worm shaft 2 through reducing bevel gear 9, 8 and the shaft 2 drives a vertical shaft 4 through worm and roller or other gearing 1, 6, the shaft 4 having splined thereon at 7 a steering arm which moves in a horizontal plane and is connected to the floating rocking lever actuating the front and rear steering wheels as described ,in Specification 523,656. The total reduction gearing between the shafts 10 and 4 is preferably such that with the ordinary turning movement of the shaft 10 the front wheels are steered about two-thirds of a complete lock, further rotation of the shaft 10 then steering the front and rear wheels in opposite directions. The bevel gears 8, 9 and the shaft 10 are mounted in a casing 11 secured to the worm-gear casing 3. The gearing 8, 9 may be adjustable by means of shims.
