Abstract

1891. Grey, R. B. Feb. 5. Rotary stirrers; containers or receptacles.-In mixing - apparatus comprising a partitioned tank with an interconnected series of compartments each of which is fitted with stirring-means, the stirrers rotate on vertical axes disposed substantially at right - angles to the major axes of the tank. The tank 1 is divided by partitions 3 into a series of intercommunicating compartments 2, each of which is provided with one or more diverters 7 and with a propeller 5 mounted on the lower end of a vertical shaft 4. The shafts 4 are driven by interconnected bevel-gearing and preferably rotate in the same direction. The lower edge of each propeller is curved and flanged so as to present ledges 6 of arcuate form, which exert an upward thrust on the mixture as it leaves the propeller. As shown, the tank 1 is cylindrical and the partitions 3 rectangular, so that the mixture passes between the edges of the partitions and the wall of the tank. The lower edges of the diverters 7 are coincident with the upper edges of the partitions 3.
