Abstract

1756. Laur, F. Feb. 3. Single - rail vehicles; sides, partitions, and framing.-A single-rail vehicle, of ovoid form, to minimize air resistance, is driven by one or more screw propellers and is fitted with supporting-planes of which the angle of incidence is adjustable to vary the weight on the rail. The frame of the vehicle body formed of wood, iron, or aluminium comprises longitudinal members 1 connected by transverse arches 2, a longitudinal passageway 7 beneath the body being formed by longitudinal members 5 and transverse members 6. Each arch 2, which may support a partition, is strengthened by horizontal cross-pieces 3 carrying flooring 8, and by struts 4. The frame is covered by plates 11, preferably of aluminium. The vehicle is fitted with flanged wheels 17, 17<1> running on a rail 14 fixed to a structure 15, which is located in the passageway 7 and is supported by standards at intervals. The wheels 17 are carried at the ends of two longitudinal members 18 within the passageway, and the wheels 17' are slidably mounted on axles connecting the members 18 to facilitate running around curves. The vehicle is steadied and prevented from leaving the track by flanged rollers 19 bearing against rails 20 at the base of the structure 15. When the screw propellers 21 are driven by electric motors, one of the rails 20 and the corresponding rollers 19 are electrically insulated for supplying the power. Supporting-planes 22 on each side of the vehicle are carried by a transverse shaft 23 adapted to be operated by the motorman to adjust the planes.
