Abstract
1201. Smith, E. R. Jan. 18. Single - rail railways ; electric locomotives and motor vehicles.-The vehicle is carried by a pair of two - wheeled bogies G with tandem doubly-flanged wheels H running on a single rail A laid on cross and longitudinal sleepers. On one or both sides guide-rails E are carried level with the centre-of gravity of the vehicle by trussed frames E<2> on the sleepers. Smaller bogies J, in line with the main bogies, each carry four horizontal rollers L, the outer rollers having flanges on their lower sides, and the inner rollers on their upper sides. The running wheels may be driven by gearing from an electromotor M mounted between them, and may be coupled by cranks and a connecting-rod 0, or each wheel may be driven by a motor on its axle. At points, the rails are arranged, as shown in Fig. 4, with hinged guide-rail sections E<3> connected at P. The guide and running rails may act as the supply and return conductors for electric traction. The Provisional Specification states that the guide-rail may be overhead.
