Alkali amides. - The production of alkali amides from ammonia . and alkali metals is facilitated by the addition of catalyzers. Suitable catalyzers are alkali oxides or hydroxides, metals of the chromium and adjacent groups as also their alloys, oxides, or other compounds, such as cobalt and chromium oxides, or chromium tungstate. Mixtures of catalyzers may be used, for example a mixture of sodium hydroxide and chromium oxide, and the catalyzers may also be used in chemical combination, or admixed with other substances. The catalyzers are effective when used as components of the materials from which the vessels in which the reaction is carried out are made. The presence of substances capable of reducing alkali-metal oxide or absorbing oxygen, for instance calcium carbide or silicon, should be avoided.
