Abstract

19,691. Norelius, E. F. Sept. 11. Endless-track engines.-In an engine having two tracks on opposite sides, steering is effected by driving and braking the tracks independently and the main frame is carried upon springs which bear at each side upon a pair of jointed trucks, the front truck carrying in an adjustable manner the front idle wheel for the endless track. The rear chain-wheels 14 on each track are driven independently from the engine 2 through the shaft 5, bevel roversing-gear 6, friction clutches 7, 8, spur gearing 9, 10, countershafts 11 and final spur gearing 12, 13. The friction clutches 7, 8 connect the spur-wheels 9 to their shafts and are operated independently by hand-levers 42 so that one or the other may be slipped to facilitate steering. The differential action may be accentuated by brake bands 7', 8<1> applied to the driven members of the clutches. The front and rear trucks on each side are pivoted to a transverse shaft 20, so that each has free vertical movement independently of the others. The front idle wheels 17 on which the endless tracks run are adjustable backward and forward by a serew-and-nut mechanism on the forward truck. The rollers 21 on the trucks run on the inside of the endless tracks.
