Abstract

Fire and smoke tube superheaters.-A superheater element adapted for insertion in the smoke-tubes of locomotive and like boilers consists of a tubular annulus, one end of which is connected to an internal or external return tube bv an alined bend lying beyond the operative length of the annulus. Figs. 3 and 6 show longitudinal and transverse sections of an element with the return tube passing along the centre and connected to one leg n<1> of a U-bend m; the other two legs n of the bend are secured in swelled parts at the end of the annulus. The opposite end of the annulus is also swelled at one point for the connexion of the supply tube, which is preferably arranged parallel with the return tube. The element may be arranged concentrically in the smoketube, being supported in position by feet r; or it may be arranged in the upper part of the smoke-tube, the pipe k occupying the lower part, in which case the element may be of oval. D, or crescent-shaped section. Fig. 7 shows four elements connected in series with inlet and outlet headers and spaced apart for insertion in different smoke-tubes.
