lNVENTOR J. H. Huduorz ATTORNEYG PatentedjJan. 27, 193 i JOHN H. HUDSON, or ARDMOR-ROKLAHOMA WATER. HEATER ANns'rEA connnn'snn V Application filed December 7, 19 28 bi ial No. 324,382. p
My invention relates to in'iprovements in water heaters and steam condensers, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and sclaimed. V
An object of my invention is to provide a device for preheating water for a steam' boiler by utilizing the exhaust steam from the steam-driven engine, pump, or the; like.
A further object of my invention is to pro-- vide a device of the type described by means of which the water may be heated and steam condensed simultaneously, and both the heated water and the steam condensate being used to replenish a boiler with Water.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which may be easily constructed at the place where it is to be used. 7
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described embodying a water heater and steam condenser in a single unit.
A. further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which may be conveniently transported from one location to another without damaging its structure or impairing its utility.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustratedin the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of my device. Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view of my device, and
Figure 3 is an end elevation of my device.
In carryinp out my invention, 1 provide two spacedamart pipelike members 1' and 2 of the same diameter and length. It is preferable to have the members 1 and 2 of large diameter, such as oil well casing or the like. The members 1 and 2 are connected at one end by a pipelike member 3 which is of the same diameter as the members 1 and 2. The members 1, 2, and 3 are joined at 4, forming a U-shaped unit.
The ends 5 and 6 of the members 1 and 2 may be readily understood.
are closed byend walls 7 and S. i A plurality of pipe coils'9 and 10 are disposed in the members 1; and 2, respectively. The pipe coil 9 is provided with an inlet pipe atll and isconnected to the coil 10 by means of a pipe 5 12. The coil lO has an outlet pipe provided at 13. Supports 15 i are disposed in the members 1 and 2 fo-rholdina the coils 9 and 10 in place. The supports 15 are rigidly heldin place by any suitable means, such as welding. A brace connector 1611's disposed between the members 1 and'2 adjacent the, ends 5 and 6 thereof to securely hold the members 1 and 2 in their proper position. The brace 16 may be constructed of pipe of the same diameter as the members land 2 and may be welded -or otherwise suitably attachedi V Inlet pipes 19 are connected to thememher 1 and are in communication with a compart-ment 17. An outlet pipe 20 is attached to the member 2 and is in communication with a compartment 18. A steam condensate pipe 21 is attached to the'member2 in a mannerlike or similar to that of the outlet pipe 20.
From the foregoing descriptionof the various parts of the device, the operation thereof The U-shaped unit is filled with steam by means of the steam pipes 19 leading from the exhaust chamber .22 of a steam engine, steam pump, or the like. sitter the steam-has filled the U-shaped unit, it may pass through the outlet pipe 20thus providinga continuous flow of steam througl'i the U-shaped unit. Cold water from any source, such as a pump 24, is forcodinto the coils '9 and 10 by means oi the outlet pipe 11, passes through the coils, and then passes outwardly through the pipe 13. The water heated by reason of its contact with the steam heated coil pipes 9 and 10. The heated water passingthrough the outlet pipe 13 is directed to a steam boiler23 Where it is readily converted into steam because of itstemperature. A condensate is formed by reason of the steam contacting with the cold water coils. The condensate thus formed passes through the pipe 21 and may be either returned to the boiler. since it is of a comparatively high temperature or it may be discarded.
It should be understood that the members 1, 2, 3, and 16 may be formed of oil Well cas- 5 ing. The coils may be formed of pipes connected by means of elbows and disposed in their respective positions in the U-shaped casing. The various connected members may be secured in place to form seal-tight connec- 1 tions by any suitable means, such as Welding;
I claim:
1. A device of the type described comprising a U-shaped casing formed from a pair of tubular portions arranged in parallelism, a
tubular element for connecting the portions together, and a coil disposed within each of .the portions and being operatively connected.
A device of the type described comprising a casing formed from a pair of tubular portions. a tubular element for connecting said portions. supporting members disposed within each of the tubular portions and being provided with openings, and a coil disposed within e: ch ot' the tubular portions and being disposed within the openings in the supports, said coils being operatively connected and being provided with an inlet pipe and an outlet pipe.
3. A device of the type described comprisinga *asing formed from a pair of: tubular portions, a tubular element for connecting said portions. supporting members disposed within each of the tubular portions and being provided with openings, a coil disposed within each of the tubular portions and being disposed within the openings in the supports, said coils being operatively connected and being provided with an inlet pipe and an outlet pipe, an inlet steam pipe entering one of said tubular portions, and an outlet steam pipe communicating with the other of said tribula r portions.
A device of the type described comprising a casing formed from a pair of tubular portions. a tubular element for connecting said portions, supporting members disposed within each of the tubular portions and being provided with openings, a coil disposed within each of the tubularportions and being disposed within the openings in the supports,
said coils being operatively connected and being-provided with an inlet pipe and an outlet pipe, said supports being narrower than the diameter of the tubular portions, an inlet steampipo communicating with one of the tubular portions, and airoutlet steam pipe conununicatin; with the other oi? said tubu- .l ar members.
Signed a t Arthnore, in the county of Carter and State of Oklahoma this 17th day of November, A. D. 1928.
