SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,872, dated February 18, 1896.
Application filed June 13, 1895.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. HERSEY, of Clifton, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Boiler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to construct a simple and efficient boiler for heating buildings by hot water or steam, and, further, to provide a boiler and easing made in sections, which may be assembled to form a boiler of any size by using a greater or smaller number of the sections.
My invention consists in a boiler formed of one or more series of hollow oblong metal loops connected together at the ends and connected with steam or water distributing pipes.
It also consists in a sectional casing inclosing the boiler and provided with a grate, an ash-pit below, and a smoke-bonnet, perforated baflie-plate, and a draft-chamber above, all as will be hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved boiler with parts of the casing broken away to show the internal construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken on line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on line 3 3 in Fig. 1. Fig. i is a horizontal section taken on line 4 4 in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is aside elevation showing the pipe connections and steam and water gages, and Fig. 6 is a plan view of the bafiie-plate.
The main body of the boiler A is formed of sections B, each of which is made oblong or 0 shape. These sections are made hollow, and the tubular portion of each, section is approximately elliptical in cross-section, this form being chosen on account of presenting a large heating-surface, and also on account of compactness. The sections are tubulated on opposite sides near the ends to form connections between the upper and lower portions of the boiler, and they are connected together by right and lefthand nipples. The end sections 0 of the boiler are longer than the sections forming the mainbody thereof, and form the end walls of the fire-chamber $erial No. 552,717. (No model.)
D. In the end sections of the top are-inserted the steam discharge pipes E, and in the lower ends of the end sections are inserted the return-pipes F.
The boiler thus constructed is inclosed in a casing G made up of sections, the front section being provided with a feed-door a and a door 19 which exposes the boiler for cleaning. The top of the casing is covered with a perforated baffle-plate 0, having a draftopening d at the center thereof which is closed by a slide-damper e, the said damper being provided with a rod f which extends through the front of the casing for the purpose of sliding the damper. On the top of the casing G and above the baffle-plate c is placed a bonnet g, having an opening at the center thereof surrounded by a collar h for receiving the smoke-pipe. The perforations of the baffle-plate c are large at the outer portions of the plate and diminish in size toward the center of the plate, the object being to cause the heat to spread toward the outer portions of the boiler.
The casing G rests upon an ash-pit H, in the upper portion of which are j ournaled revolving grates z, and the lower portion of the ash-pit is provided with an ash-doorj. The ash-pit consists of front and back sections 70 land end sections m m. The end sections m m are of approximately the same width as the end sections 0 of the boiler, so that for every series of boiler-sections two end sections are added to the ash-pit, and longer grates are provided, so that the grate-surface is increased in proportion to the increase in size of the boiler. The discharge-pipes E F are connected and provided with gage-cocks n, a water-gage o, and a steam-gage p.
The perforated baifie-plate serves to distribute the heat and cause the several boilersections to be evenly heated. At the same time it prevents the escape of an undue amount of the heat by the way of the smokeipe.
p When a strong direct draft is required, the damper e is removed from over the large central aperture of the baffle-plate, allowing the products of combustion to pass directly to the smoke-pipe.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. In a boiler, the combination with a casing, of a series of hollow sections communicating with each other and the end sections being extended downwardly from the intermediate sections to form the ends of the firebox, a bathe-plate arranged over the sections, and a s1noke-cap surinounting the baffleplate, substantially as described.
2. In a boiler, the combination with a casing, of boiler-sections, and a baffle-plate arranged over the sections and in the path of the draft, said baffle-plate having a centrallylocated damper, substantially as described.
3. In a boiler, the combination with a cas ing, of sections, and a perforated baffle-plate arranged over the sections and in the path of the draft, substantially as described.
. 4. In a boiler, the combination with a casing, of hollow sections, a perforated ba'filcplate arranged over said sections and in the path of the draft, and a smoke-cap sur1nou11tin g the baflie-plate and having a draft-orifice, substantially as described.
5. In a boiler, the combination with a casing and hollow sections, of a battle-plate arranged over the sections and in the path of the draft, the said bafile-plate being perforated throughout its extent and the perforations being larger at the edges of the plate and gradually decreasing in size toward the center, substantially as described.
