HEATING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,315, dated April 27, 1897. Application filed July 21, 1896. Serial No. 600,024. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A IRVING STERNBERG, of Gouverneur, in the county of St. Lawrence, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Heating Apparatus, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in heating apparatus, having more particular reference to hot-water or steam apparatus.
My object is to improve the detailed construction thereof so as to obtain the best results; and to that end my invention consists in the several new and novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described, and which are specifically set forth in the claims hereunto annexe It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in Which Figure 1 shows a vertical section through the heating apparatus. Fig. 2 is a transverse section just above the furnace-door. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the plate upon which the tubes rest. Fig. 4 is a view of one of the sections of the fire-pot, showing the steam or water pipes in engagement therewith. Fig. 5 is a side view thereof. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of one of the sections of the fire-box.
A is the water-dome or steam-chamber, to which are secured water-tubes a, closed at their lower ends, and the said tubes being arranged in concentric circles of varying lengths, and are also arranged with one or more rows of tubes outside the fire-pot, extending down to plate 19, which constitutes the base upon which the fire-box B, made up of sections 0, is supported. This plate I) supports not only the fire-box, but also the concentric rows of tubes, upon the upper ends of which is located the dome or steam-chamber. Directly below the opening 0 in the plate I? are mounted the grates, the plate I) being mounted in any suitable way, as, for instance, by the circular support cl, which forms the ash-pit D beneath the grate, and which also forms the outer space at the bottom from which the regular draft or uptake is taken.
Extending around the outside of the tubes, except the portion cut out by the door 6 and the water-chamber e, and up to within several inches of where the tubes enter the dome is an additional plate f, lined on its inner side It will be observed that one row of tubes lie up close to the fire-pot 13, supporting the sections 0, the upper ends of which are cut out, as shown at h, for the purpose of sustaining them in their normal position. It will be observed that the heat from the firebox passes up among all the tubes, except the outside row, which I have indicated at 9, until it strikes. the dome, from whence by the aid of the draft it is turned down on the outside of the additional plate, striking the outer row of tubes and passing to the chamber at the bottom of the boiler, and thence into the I uptake.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a heating apparatus, the supportingplate I), provided with the opening 0, and the fire-box B composed of vertical sections 0, each one of which has notches or recesses formed in its upper edge, combined with the circular row of pipes a, which catch in said notches or recesses and support the sections in position, substantially as shown.
2. In a heating apparatus, the supportingplate I), having the central opening (J, the two concentric rows of pipes supported by the plate, and the fire-boxB, made in sections and supported in position by the inner row of tubes, combined with an outer row of tubes, a circular division-plate f, the dome, a waterchamber, and a supporting-plate d, located in the ash-pit, substantially as described.
