SECTIONAL STEAM-BOILER.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. WILsoN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at W'estfield, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Steam- Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following ing to be full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates particularly to certain improvements in sectional steam-boilers for heating purposes, for which Letters Patent No. 187,692 were granted to me on the 20th day of February, 1877. The construction covered by the patent above named consists, substantially, of a boiler composed of aseries of vertical segmental sections, each having an inwardly-extending horizontal section at the top, which latter when in position forms a circular opening at the top of the boiler for the reception and retention in place of the magazine containing the fuel. In addition to the above-indicated construction a number of series of radial pipes extend from the inner walls of the segmental sections, into which they open, to or nearly to the outer wall of the fuel-magazine, the outer ends of these radial pipes being closed.
The jacket surrounding the boiler just described is in close contact with the outer wall of the segmental sections.
The object of myinvention is toiucrease the heating of the boiler just outlined in such a manner that a material saving in fuel is thereby effected, and I have accomplished this obj ect by means of the changes in construction which I will now proceed to definitely describe and claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation, partly in section and partly broken away, of my improved form of boiler. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of Fig. 1, taken in the line as :10. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the boiler with portions broken away.
Referring to the drawings, a is the base of the boiler, of annular form, below which is the grate b and ash-pit 0. Above this annular base a are the series of hollow vertical segmental sections (Z d, which when placed together, as shown, form an annular water-space connected to the'annular base a at each section by the short pipes d d. From the inner surface of the segmental sections (1 ,(l are arranged a number of horizontal series of radial pipes, e, closed at their inner ends and opening into the segmental sections cl at their other ends.
The construction just described is substantially the same as in my patent hereinbefore referred to, with the exception that the segmental sections dhave no horizontal extensions at thetop. In place of these extensions, which in my former patent supported the fuel-magazine, I have arranged the annular chamberf, preferably of smaller diameter than the main body of the boiler and raised above it sufficiently to form the spacef between the entire circumferences of the two sections. It is con nected with each section (I by the curved pipe f. Resting upon the edge of the frame-work g of the furnace is the double-walled jacket l2, filled in with mineral wool or any other suitablenon-conducting material. This jacket is of sufficient diameter to allow for the annular space It between it and the segmental sections, thus permitting the heat of combustion to operate upon both walls of the boiler.
Z is the cylindrical magazine for holding the fuel, and instead of receiving its support at its upper ends, as in my former patent, its lower end rests upon the longer pipes e of one of the lower series of radial pipes e. A removable cover, Z, surmounts the magazine Z.
It will be seen by my improved construction just described that I have not only provided for a more complete circulation of the heat of combustion throughout the furnace, but
have also materially increased the surface upon which the heat of combustion acts in producing steam. From the upper annular chamber, f, suitable connections (not shown) lead to the points where the generated steam is to be utilized.
To my improved apparatus are to be added the necessary safety-valve, steam-gage, draftregulator, &c., which go to form a complete steam-generator; but these of course form no part of myimprovements.
I claim-- 1. In a steamgenerator, the combination,
the series of radial pipes e, the connected annular steam-chamber 7", connected thereto by pipes f", and the jacket h, with space k between it and the sections of the boiler, substantially as shown and described.
