STEAM-HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 397,651, dated February 12, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, DANIEL D. G. LANG- LANDS and OTIS E. MoUL'roN, of Dover, in the county of Stra'tford and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful improvement in Steam-Heaters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a partial central and vertical section of our improved heater. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, the body of the stove being in section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 03 42c, and Fig. 4 is a similar section on line 1 1 of Fig. 1.
represents the casing, in which is the grate. \Vithin the casing a boiler is inserted, consisting of a circular fire-pot, 11, connected by integral and vertically-projecting waterlegs 12't0 the steam-dome 13. The contour of the body is preferably cylindrical, and the legs 12 are sufficiently spaced to permit the free passage of products of combustion between them, the widest space being provided in front of the stove, as shown in Fig. 2, to admit a convenient passage of coal through the fire-door 13 to the grate. The inner and outer walls of the various legs are eccentric, as best illustrated in Fig. 3, and also the similar walls of the lower cylindrical portion of the boiler, whereby when the said legs are filled with water the narrow surface, which is the inner surface, and which is also in most direct contact with the products of combustion, will be heated first and the Water adjacent to said contracted face be first converted into steam, thus causing a quick circulation.
Through the upper or horizontal portion of the boiler-body a distance from the center a series of fire-tubes, 14 and 15, are vertically proj ected, of which the tubes 15 are the largest and located at the rear. These tubes are designed as flues, which serve the dual purpose of conduetin the products of combustion gerial No. 274,246. (No model.)
through the upper portion of the boilerbody, contributing to the heating-surface of said boiler, and providing a ready and convenient passage for said products of combustion from the fire-pot, formed by the inner circumference of the boiler-body, to the off-take flue or pipe 17, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, the position of the lines 14. and 15 being illustrated in section in Fig. a.
In the upper portion of easing the steamdome 13 is attached in any approved manner or cast as an integral portion of said top. A connection is formed between the central upper surface of the boiler and the under central surface of the dome by means of flanged collars 18, as shown, or in any other appropri ate manner known in the art.
Upon the urn or top ornament of the casing a steanrgage, 19, is mounted, connected with. the steam-dome by a pipe, 20. From one side of the steam-dome a tube, 21, is projected upward through the stove-top, in which a diaphragm is fitted, the said diaphragm constituting the fulcrum of a lever, 22, pivoted upon the easing-top at one end, the other end being connected by a chain, 23, with the draftdoor 24, also with cold-air checladraft in feeddoor 13*. The draft-door is normally held open by said chain, to be closed when the diaphragm acts, which causes the outer end of the lever 22 to raise and close the draft-door and open the check-draft at same time.
A water-gage, 24, is located outside the easing, preferably near the back, connected with one leg of the boiler, and the dome 13is tapped by a suitable steam-supply pipe, 25, from which branches may be projected in any direction.
25 is the blow-off pipe from the safety valve B.
The boiler may be supplied with water by means of an inlet-tube connected with the main body, or the water may be otherwise in troduced, as may be found desirable.
It will be observed that the boiler, having a large amount of heatingsurface, a large amount of steam-space, and a comparatively small amount of water-space, is not liable to become water-logged. It will also be observed that we provide a safe apparatus,
' simple and economical, which may readily be introduced into or incorporated with any casing.
In the drawings the steanrdome is illus 5 trated as within the casing; but we desire it distinctly understood that we do not limit ourselves to this construction, as the upper portion of the casing may constitute the dome, the walls of the same forming the upper walls of the heater, and we contemplate such construction.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as neW,'and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1: A steam-heater comprising the casing, its grate, ash-pit, and smoke-outlet, a boiler within the casing and forming the fire-pot, flues through the upper part of the boiler, vertical spaced water-legs in the upper end of the fire-pot, and a steam-dome above the fines and communicating with the boiler, all constructed and combined substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a casing, of a boiler provided with a series of spaced downwardly-extending water-legs and connected with a circular eccentric fire-pot and flues projected through the upper or body portion of the boiler, and a steam-dome connected with and supported above the boiler within the casing, substantially as shown and described.
3. The herein-described boiler, comprising the fire-pot 11, having vertically-projecting 3 5 spaced water-legs 12, vertical flues through its top, and a steam-dome over said fines and communicating with the boiler, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with a casing and a steam-dome forming a portion of the same, of 40 a boiler supported in said casing, consisting of a tubular body connected with the steamdome, a cylindrical lower portion forming a fire-pot, and eccentric water-legs uniting the upper and lower sections, substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination, with a casing provided with a boiler, a steam-dome, and an exhaust, of a supply-pipe projected from the dome, a safety-valve in said supply-pipe communicat- 5o ing with said exhaust, substantially as shown and described.
6. The combination, with a casing, of a boiler provided with a series of spaced downwardly-extending water-legs having their inner and outer walls eccentric, and fines projected through the upper or body portion of the boiler, and a steam-dome connected with and supported above the boiler within the casing, substantially as shown and described.
7. The combination, with a casing, of a boiler provided with a series of spaced downwardlyextending water-legs having eccentric inner and outer walls and fiues projected through the upper or body portion of the boiler, a steam-dome connect-ed with and supported above the boiler, a steam-gage connected with the dome, a water-gage connected with the boiler, and a safety-valve and outlet-pipe connected with the said steam-dome, substan- 7o tially as shown and described.
