To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. THATCHER, of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hot-Water and Steam Boilers, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction and operation of hot-water and steam boilers.
My invention consists in certain features of novelty hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a vertical section of my improved device. Fig. II isatransverse section taken on line II II, Fig. I. Fig. III is an enlarged perspective of the dome and auxiliary heating-chamber. Fig. IV is an enlarged perspective showing the chamber surrounding the fuel-opening and the means forsupplying water to the various water chambers or staves. FigV is an enlarged detail perspective showiugthe manner of arranging the hollow staves and the method of circulation between the same.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents an ash-pit, and2 a door leading to the same.
3 represents an ordinary rotatable grate; 4,
the gear for operating the same. 5 is a shaft connecting said gear with the handle 6, situated on the outside of the boiler.
7 represents the fire-chamber, 8 the fuelopening leading thereto, and 9 the door for closing said opening.
10 represents the opening for inspection and through which a poker can be inserted in order to clean out the grates, and 11 a door closing the same.
The fire-box is made up principally of a series of' hollow staves 12, constructed, preferably, as shown, in the form of a segment; but I do not confine myself to any certain shape, as the boiler may be made square, oblong,
round, or any other desired shape without departing from the spiritof myinvention. The staves 12 rest upon a circular base-plate 13, each of said staves havinga water-chamber 14 and surrounded by diverging partitions or walls 15, which are joined at their inner and outer ends by the circular walls 16.
Located between each of the chambers 14 are spaces 17, through which the heat-current or products of combustion pass, the circular Walls 16 extending beyond the partitions until they meet each other in the center of the spaces 17. The heat-current or products of combustion pass upward,as shown in Figs. I and V, from the fire-pot until they come to openings 18 between the water-chambers in the hollow staves. thence passing down through the spaces 17 and out through the openings 19, near the bottom of said staves,
and up through an annular space 20, between the outer walls 16 of the water-chambers and a non-conducting shell 21, surrounding said chambers, passing from thence on up through a circular opening 22 in a deflecting-plate 23, and from thence either up and around an auxiliary heating-chamber 2% or through inverted-cone-shaped openings 25 in said auxiliary chamber, and from thence out through the flue 26 at the top of the boiler.
27 represents a supply-pipe,which is tapped into openings 28 into detached tubes 29, each of said tubes preferably having openings 30, by which r they are connected by means of nipples 31 with the hollow staves 12, each of said hollow tubes 29 connecting two staves.
The tubes are thus divided up in order to be more easily connected with the staves and to prevent difficulty in the way of contraction and expansion. As the water becomes heated and the steam generated, they pass on up through the hollow staves 12, out at the top of the same through an elbow-joint or other suitable connection 32 and into a surmount ing arch-shaped dome 33, said dome forming the top of the fire-box for deflecting the products of combustion through the openings 18 into the spaces 17 and having a suitable chamber 34 for the reception of water. Secured to the dome 33 is an auxiliary heating chamber or reservoir 35. This auxiliary reservoir 35 is of larger diameter than the dome and projecting radially beyond the sides of the dome, and the products of combustion pass up through the opening 22, after deflecting against the bottom of the same, a portion of the products of combustion passing up through the inverted-cone-shaped openings 25, as before described. The walls of the inverted cone-shaped openings form intermediate braces in the reservoir 35 between its top and bottom plates.
38 represents openings, of which there may be anynumber desired in the top of the auxiliary reservoir 35, said openings being connected with the pipes 39 for conveying the water or steam to any desired point.
40 represents legs connected with the circular plate 23 at their upper ends, the same being forked and having their lower ends resting on the pipes 32 to aid in supporting said plate.
41 represents an enlarged hollow stave located over the fuel'opening 8, and 42 a hollow stave located beneath the same, said staves being connected with pipes 43 and having the pipes 32, in connection with the upper staves, for conveying the water or steam into the dome The lower stave 42 is connected by a suitable pipe 44 on each of its. sides with one of the hollow tubes or pipes 29, by which water is supplied to the same.
45 represents a cap-piece resting on the outer shell 21 of the boiler, said cap-piece having a reservoir 47, into which may be inserted sand, as shown at 48,01 other non-conducting material. The shell 21 is made in sections and the sections connected to the cappiece by means of turnbuckles 49.
My device is intended more especially to be used in connection with bases already constructed in the ordinary form, as it will be seen that it can be easily removed or secured to an ordinary base.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a steam or hot-Water circulating boiler, the combination of a series of vertical hollow staves forming the fire-box, spaces between said staves for the passage of the products of combustion, a-surmounting arch-shaped dome having a water-chamber and forming the top of the fire-box for deflecting the products of combustion into the spaces between said staves, and suitable communications between the hollow staves and the waterchamber of said dome, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a steam or hot-watercirculating boiler, the combination of a series of vertical hollow staves forming the fire-box, spaces between said staves for the passage of the products of combustion, a suitable water-supply to said hollow staves, a hollow surmounting archshaped dome forming the top of the fire-box for deflecting the products of combustion into the spaces between said staves,suitablecommunications between the hollow staves and said dome for the passage of hot Water and steam, and an enlarged auxiliary water-heating reservoir secured to the top of said dome and communicating therewith, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a steam or hot-water circulating boiler, the combination of a suitable base portion forming the aslrpit, a grate supported upon said base, a circular base-plate surrounding said grate, a series of vertical hollow staves supported upon said base-plate and arranged to form the fire-box, spaces between said staves for the passage of the products of combustion, water-supply pipes communicating with the lower ends of said staves, an archshaped dome surmounting all of said staves and forming the top of the fire-box for deflecting the products of combustion into the spaces between the hollow staves, a waterchamber in said dome, and suitable connections between the water-spaces of the staves and said water-chamber, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a steam or hot-water circulating boiler, the combination of a series of hollow staves supported upon a suitable base and forming the fire-box, spaces between said stavesfor the passage of the products of combustion, suitable water-supply pipes communicating with the lower ends of said staves, a surmounting arch-shaped dome communicating with the upper ends of said staves and forming the top of the fire-box for deflecting the products of combustion through said spaces, ;a circular auxiliary water-heating reservoir supported above and communicating with .said dome and projecting radially beyond the sides of the dome, and a suitable deflecting Fplate surrounding the dome for directing the course of the products of combustion, substantially as and for the purpose explained.
5. In a steam or hot-water circulating boiler,
the combination of a series of hollow staves forming the fire-box, spaces between said istaves for the passage of the products of com- Qbustion, a suitable water-supply to said hol- Zlow staves, a surmounting dome, pipes communicatin g between said staves and the dome, a circular deflecting-plate surrounding the dome and having an annular opening for the ipassage of the products of combustion, and legs 40,-depending from said deflecting-plate and resting upon the pipes which form communication between the staves and dome, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. In a steam or hot-water circulating boiler,
the combination of a series of staves forming the fire-box, spaces between them for the passage of the products of combustion, a surmounting dome in communication with said staves, an auxiliary water-heating reservoir -on top of said dome and of larger diameter than the dome, inverted-cone-shaped openings through said auxilary reservoir, a surrounding shell, an annular space between the shell and auxiliary reservoir, and a circular deflecting-plate between the shell and dome provided with an annular opening adjacent to the dome, whereby the products of combustion will be deflected around the dome and auxiliary reservoir and through the cone shaped openings, substantially as set forth.

In a steam or hot-water circulating boiler, the combination of a series of vertical hollow staves containing water-chambers, spaces between said chambers, through which the products of combustion pass, a hollow dome situated over said chambers and having connection therewith, and an auxiliary reservoir connected with said hollow dome, said reservoir having invertedcone-shaped openings 25, through which a portion of the products of JOHN M.
