Application filed January 27, 1919. Serial No. 273,240.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES E. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Heaters for Furnaces, of which the following, when taken in connection with the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a specification. I
This invention relatesto the fire box of water heating and steam generating boilers.
Among the objects of the invention are to obtain means for supplying heated air to the fire box of a boiler-above the burning body of fuel therein, and to so .directthe flow thereof as to accelerate combustion and obviate the production of any considerable quantity of smoke; and to obtain an apparatus which is simple in constructlon, easily understood and installed, economical, durable, not liable to get out of order, to become broken or otherwise injured either by handling or by the heat or other conditions existing in said fire box, and applicable to old as well as new installations.
In said drawings illustrating a device which embodies this invention Figure l is a side elevation of a boiler, with a portion of the side wall broken away to expose to view the interior thereof and a device embodying this invention installed therein.

Shell G is shown in Fig; 1 installed in fire box C, adjacent to discharge flue F and above the fuel on grate bars E. H, H, represent air inlet aperture'sinthe ends of shell, Gr. I, (Fig. 4) represents the base-of the device, and'J discharge outlets or passage ways. j, j, represent inclined faces forming the bottoms of the outlets J ,'and
extending forward from the back: of the chamber in shell G,.and downward, to determine the direction of flow of air discharged from the device lnto the fire-box. The arrows X indicate the directionof the flow of air from the device and in the fire box C. K,-
K, (Figs. 3 and 4:), re resent baffle' plates. L, L, also represent ba e plates which are illustrated as being maintained in place by resting against the ends Is, 7c, of baille plates K, K, with bars M of base I extending along the lower edges of said plates L.
In the modification which is illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 the shell (G), is made in two parts, respectively provided with flanges g, g, and joined by the bolts 9, g. The balfle plate K extends longitudinally in the chamber of the device from the front to the rear walls thereof; and baffle plates L are curved.
The several baflie plates K, L, and K, L, are heated by conduction from the base I and shell G of the device; and air flowing through said shell is warmed by convection from said baffle'plates as well as from the shell and base. Said bafile plates also direct the course of said air flowing through the device.
N, N, represent bolts to attach base I to shell G.
The operation of the device, when installed in place in a fire box, is as follows The draft of the fire box induces a flow of air from the device, through outlet passage ways J, J, and said flow is supplied from an inflow through apertures H, H. Air flowing into the device through said apertures H, H, is directed upward by the baffle plates L, L, (or L, L), and after passing over said baffle plates flows downward, over plates K, K, (or K), to and through the outlet passage ways J, J, into the fire box C. The flow of the air through the device, as above described, heats and expands it, and it is discharged into the fire box above the fuel on the grate bars, and into the gases from said fuel. The direction of the discharge intermiXes said air and gases, and said air being at a high temperature good combustion takes place.
I claim:
1. An air supply and heating device consisting of side and end walls, a top and a separable base arranged to form a shell provided with a chamber, said chamber provided with inlets positioned in the end walls of the shell adjacent to said base, and with outlets positioned on the upper face of said base and consisting "of grooves the bottoms whereof are inclined downward from the inlet ends thereof, combination with batlie plates, in said chamber, some thereof arranged to direct air flowing thereinto to above the re mainde'r there'of, and said remainder ofv said, baffle plates disposed in said chamberto direct air 'i'n'the upper portion of the chamber downward to said outlets and linderneath the one of said side walls which is positioned over said outlets, said outletsari'anged so that air fiowstherefrom, and from said chamber, at substantially rightangles to the flow thereof in said chamber.
2. An air'supply and heating device consisting of walls, a top and a separable base arranged to form a shell provided wlth a chamber, said chamber provided with inlets positioned in the end walls of the shell adjacent to said base andwith outlets positioned on the upper face of said base and consisting of grooves the bottoms whereof are inclined downward from the inlet ends chamber, through said inlets, upward and to above said baffle plates, and the remainder of said baffle plates disposed to direct said airdownward to said outlets, to flow underneath the side wall which is over said outlets and from said chamber at substantially right angles to the flow thereof in said chamber.
