A. N. RoBERTs WATER HEATER Filed Oct.' 23, 1920 Patented Dec. 15, 1925.
ummm Ksf-mrias ARTHUR NELSONROBERTS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WATER HEATER.
Applieation ined october 2s, 1920. 'serial no. 418,975.
To all whom. t mag/jconcern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR N. Ronn'rs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, vhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water Heaters, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vwater heaters, and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved water heater for domestic purposes, which is adapted to be incorporated with any type of heating stove, so that the necessity of providing a separate heating device for water is eliminated, thereby resulting in a saving` of fuel, said heater being so constructed as to permit a circulation of warm water through the water pipes at all times, thus preventing` the freezing of the pipes in cold weather.
Another object of the invention is to proA vide a water heater of the above character which is of exceptionally simple and durable construction, one that can be easily kept in repair, one that is simple to manufacture,
and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more speciiically described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the coil used in the water system.
Figure 2 is an elevation of the same looking in the direction indicated by the arrow in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter C indicates the improved heating coil which will be positioned in a stove of a suitable construction so that water passing from a tank through the coil and back to the tank may be heated in the usual manner.
The coil C is of a special construction, and is so formed that the water circulating therethrough will be heated instantaneously and this coil is placed directly within the stove in the usual manner. This coil includes a lower loop 10 having the spaced legs 11 and 12,. The legs 11 and 12 are connected together in spaced relation by means of a U-coupling 13. Arranged above thelower loop 10 is an upper longitudinally extendingpipe 141 which is arranged above anddirectly between the legs 11 and 12 so that the/heat from the lire in the stove will readily ilow between the legs and against the pipe 141s. This pipe lei is connected with the leg` 11 which is formed relatively long lby means of a Ucoupling 15. It can be seen that this U-coupling 15 is inclined so as to position the pipe 14 in between the legs 11 and 12. The opposite end of the pipe 14 is connected to an L-coupling 16 by means of a U-coupling 17 as clearly shown in the drawings. The inner end of the leg 12 has also connected thereto an L-coupling 18. The L-couplings 1G and 18 are arranged substantially in vertical alignment and form the means for con necting the coil with the tank from which the water is drawn and after being heated returned.
The improved coil C. may be assembled and placed directly in the stove above the grates thereof and the outlet and inlet pipes l19 and 2O respectively threaded into the elbow couplings 16 and 18, or short lengths of pipes may be connected to these elbows and extended through the wall of the stove and connected to the pipes 19 and 20.
By this construction it can be seen that the coils can be readily and easily associated with any type of stove. The size of coil is determined by the quantity of water de sired, and by the size of the stove with which it is associated.
It can be seen that the cold water will flow from the lower end of the tank through the pipe 20 into and through the coil and then be returned to the tank through the pipe 19 in a heated state.
From the foregoing description, it canv be seen that an exceptionally simple and durable water heater has been provided, which can be incorporated with any heating stove and which is of such a construction Vthat hot water can be instantaneously had.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention; but,
I claim:
1. In a water heating unit the combination of a single loop disposed in a horizontal plane comprising long and short spaced parallel legs connected by a U-shaped coupling, a second loop disposed in a vertical plane immediately above the space between lll) the legs of the lirst mentioned loop and comprising long and short legs, means connecting the end of the longer legs of the first and second mentioned loops opposite to the ends to which the shorter legs thereof are respectively connected7 and inlet and outlet conduits respectively connected at the free ends of the shorter legs of the lirst and second mentioned loops and extending` transversely of the parallel disposition of the legs of said loops.
f2. A compact Water heating unit comprising a single loop disposed in a horizontal plane comprising long and short parallel spaced legs connected by a Ushaped coupling, a single loop disposed in a vertical plane immediately above the space between the legs of the first mentioned loop and also comprising long and short legs, a coupling connecting the longer legs oi both of said loops at the ends of said longer legs opposite those ends to Which the shorter legs of the loops are connected, the longer leg of the second loop being shorter than the longer leg of the first loop whereby to terminate short of the coupling of the iirst mentioned loop, and inlet and outlet con duits respectively connected in a vertical plane at the free ends of the shorter legs of the first and second mentioned loops and extending in line at right angles to the legs of the said first and second mentioned loops.
