Abstract

17,990. Beningfield, H. D. July 30. Aerial machines without aerostats; planes, arrangement and construction of; tanks, arrangement of.- The main supporting- surface A of an aeroplane tapers in breadth from the back to the front and has an open front portion to form the two dart-shaped points 1, 2. Two keels B, C increasing in depth and thickness from the front to the rear are secured to the main plane and prevent the machine from side-slipping. The keels may be hollow tapered bodies to serve as floats for supporting the machine on water and as receptacles for supplies of petrol &c. The main plane is cambered longitudinally or transversely. The motor and propeller J are arranged between the keels about one-third of the overall length of the machine from its front end. Keel planes G', G' may be arranged above the plane A, and a keel G<3> above the tailplane D. Steering.-Elevators E<1>, E', F are arranged at the sides of the tail-plane D and between the pointed ends of the main plane.
