Abstract

Wells, shafts, and tunnels; shaft-sinking by boring. -In a ferro-concrete or like lining for wells, shafts, tunnels, &c., the reinforcement consists of a series of ring frames each comprising inner and outer channel irons a, b connected by diagonal bracing-members c, adjacent ring frames being connected together by diagonal bracing-members e. The framework is surrounded by a casing f built of metal segments, the segments being preferably flanged and the abutting flanges welded together. The casing may be corrugated, and recesses k may be provided in the wall of the excavation. Cement is introduced behind the casing f, as by means of a pipe j. The Provisional Specification describes a cutting-shoe for a shaft lining comprising segments bolted together and having a cutting-edge, a top beam the width of the lining, flanges between the top beam and the cutting-edge, and lugs on the top beam for attachment to the reinforcement; it is also stated that the segments of the casing f may be rusted together.
