Abstract

20,727. Walker, C. Oct. 1. Shafts.-Tubbing for use in pit sinking &c. is formed with a continuous groovefaround the peripheries of the segments, which, when the tubbing is assembled, forms conduits to be subsequently filled with cement or the like through holes j in the flanges b, c. The inner edges of the tubbing may be formed with small bevels k to provide caulking - spaces. The bolt holes g are preferably of larger diameter than the bolts h, and may each have a flared mouth corresponding with conical portions l on the bolt. A conical washer o may be provided. The corners of the segments may be formed with a rightangled recess extending from front to back forming, when assembled, a channel into which wooden wedges may be driven to make tight joints. The space between the exterior of the tubbing and the walls of the excavation may be filled in with cement, overflow or supply holes q being formed preferably in the strengthening-ribs e of the tubbing. The rings of tubbing are maintained in a concentric position, while the surrounding space is being filled by means of brackets carrying adjustable screws which are adapted to bear against abutments lying against the walls of the excavation.
