Abstract

13,307. Stibbe, G. May 30. Circular machines; knitted fabrics.-An inturned welt or hem is formed on a circular knitting-machine having alternate frame and rib needles, by making a partial setting-up course on alternate frame needles 1, 3, 5, &c. and on the corresponding pairs a b, c d, e f, &c. of the rib needles, as shown in Fig. 1, then making a partial setting-up course on the alternate frame needles 2, 4, 6, &c. and on the corresponding pairs b c, d e, f g, &c. of the rib needles, as shown in Fig. 3, then putting ail the rib needles back out of action while a portion of fabric for the welt is knitted on the frame needles, and finally transferring the loops of the setting-on course from the rib needles to the frame needles and knitting a join'ngcourse. Each loop of the initial course is thus integrally united to a loop of the body web. The rib needles are carried by specially-shaped jacks 21 sliding in tricks in an auxiliary dial and having slots 24 engaging the edge of a disk 25, Fig. 14. The auxiliary dial is rigidly connected to the main dial by pins 64, Fig. 14, and a cap 53 having tricks 55 engaging corresponding tricks on the auxiliary dial; the relative position of the two dials may, however, be adjusted. The needle dial is suspended from a cross-bar on uprights 36 of a rising and falling frame, and the auxiliary dial is supported on a ring 52 on the same uprights. The rising and falling frame is reciprocated by a lever and cam which is rotated step by step by a ratchetwheel and pawl moved by a constantly-rotated cam. The dials are thus automatically moved out of the way when a welt is completed and returned to the lower position when another welt is to be made. The dials are driven in unison with the cylinder by two or more catches 59 pivoted to the auxiliary dial and engaging projections 60 on the cylinder. In order to avoid any obstacle, the catches 59 may be disengaged one by one from the projections 60 by fixed cams 64 engaging rollers 63 on the catches.
