Annealing; hardening.-A process for rendering manganese steel capable of being easily machined consists in heating the casting or other article to 360-800‹ C., or preferably 550-675‹ C., maintaining such temperature for some time, and then cooling in any suitable way. The heating may be effected in cast-iron filings, sand, ashes, lime, &c. After machining, the article may be hardened at above 900‹ C. in oil, water, &c.
