Abstract

11,619. Welin, A. May 11. Davits.-In boat raising and lowering gear, the davit arm a carries a pulley c, on the axle of which is a pinion e gearing with a fixed curved rack f. As the davit is luffed, the pulley is rotated and the fall wound on the drum for the purpose of compensating for the movement of the davit head. To arrange that the compensating action shall not take place when the davit arm is near the vertical position, the pulley may be cut away at the centre, as shown in Fig. 2, or some loss of motion may be arranged before the pinion e is clutched to the pulley spindle. In place of a rack and pinion, the pulley may be actuated by two ropes, each secured at one end to the frame on either side of the davit arm, the other ends being coiled in opposite directions round the pulley.
