Crushers with vibrating jaws; cracking nuts. -Coco-nuts &c. are cracked in a machine by longitudinal pressure applied simultaneously at the point and root of the nut. The nuts are fed between a stationary jaw e1, Fig. 1, and a moving jaw f1, which is reciprocated on rods k1 by rods g1 operated by an eccentric C on a shaft B driven through spur gearing D, d, from the driving-shaft. A grid or fork l1 carried by a spring-pressed lever l2 operated by rods n, o from the jaw f1 supports the nuts during the crushing operation. The spring m is compressed during the crushing stroke of the jaw f1 and, at the end of the stroke, throws the lever l2 and fork l1 back, thus releasing the crushed nut. In the backward movement, the spring m1 is compressed and returns the fork l1. A lever on the spindle x of the lever l2 carries a set-screw which engages in holes in a flat spring on the framing in the two extreme positions of the lever l2. The nuts are fed from a hopper p, Fig. 6, by an endless-chain elevator a, the brackets s having prongs which pass through the grid q. The nuts are conveyed to the upper side of a pronged grid t, whence they are fed by a conveyer u to an opening W located above the jaws e1, f1. The elevator a and conveyer u are preferably driven by chain gearing from the shaft B.
