Cracking nuts; mills and apparatus. - In a cracking and crushing machine, in which nuts &c. are fed one at a time from a hopper c, Fig. 1, on to an anvil or holder a, and are cracked by a hammer n carried by a rod o, which is pivoted at p and operated by means of a cam, or by one or more pins q on a disk, on the driving-shaft k, the lever o is connected by one or more preferably adjustable springs r to the framing, or to a piston working in a vacuum cylinder fixed to the framing. The hopper c is mounted on links m and vibrated by a rod f having a pin g engaging in a slot i in a wheel or disk on the shaft k, and the lower end of the delivery tube d normally rests on an extension e of the anvil a. A groove in the extension c guides the nuts into the recess b, Fig. 3, in the anvil, and the cracked nuts are pushed off the anvil by a bent arm s, which is secured to the tube d and passes up through a recess t in the back of the anvil. Pins x are provided on the framing of the machine to receive the driving-wheels l when transporting the machine. In a modification, the hopper is mounted at the back of the machine, and the nuts fall through an opening in the bottom of the hopper and are fed on to the anvil by a plunger; in this form, the hopper may be pivotally mounted and supported by struts so that when not in use it may be folded over the machine. The kernels and broken shells may be delivered into separate receptacles by means of fingers &c. operated from the shaft k.
