To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. WVEHREN- BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mound City, in the county of Pulaski and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Baling-Press, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a balirig-press, and the object of the invention is a press which will be self-feeding, in which the pressure will increase as the plunger advances into the baling-chamber, and in which the movements will be comparatively slow of those parts in which a high speed is objectionable as, for example, in a belt or flywheelwith at the same time a quick action upon the part of the plunger, thereby givin a greater capacity to the machine by reason of the rapid action of the plunger, and at the same time afford a saving in power by applying the pressure when it is most needed and producing the speed of the drivingmechanism.
The invention consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter set forth, pointed out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my baling- Fig. 2 is a plan of the press. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a block-operating lever. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the plunger and feeder, operating means, a portion of the plunger and of the baling-press be ing shown in section. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view show the block-holder and certain parts connected thereto. Fig. 6 is a section taken through the block-holder, the end of a block being shown in elevation. Fig. 7 is a diagrammatic side view of feeding mechanism.
In these drawings, A represents a truck provided with a baling-chamber B, upon which is arranged a platform B and a feedhopper 13. Upon the truck are mounted shafts C, C, and G. The shaft C carries a belt-wheel D and a gear-wheel D, which last meshes with a gearwheel E, mounted upon the shaft C. The shaft C is provided with a cranked portion F, to which is pivoted a pitman F, bifurcated as shown at F A disk G is rotatably mounted upon the truck, being fixed to the shaft G. This disk rocks back and forth in the bifurcation of the pitman F, and the said pitman is pivotally connected to the said disk. A plunger-rod H is pivotally connected to the disk at a point opposite the pivotal point of the pitman F, and the plunger-rod H is pivoted to a plunger H in the usual manner. A feede1-arm J, also bifurcated, is pivotally connected to the disk G, the bifurcated portion straddling the disk, and adjacent the disk a block J is arranged between the bifurcated members of the feeder-arm and connected to them and a lug J formed upon the periphery of the disk G. A spring J is connected at one end to the block J and at the opposite end to the lug J The end of the feeder-arm which works in the hopper B is provided with the usual feed-block or feeder-jaws J To deliver hay to the hopper B, where it can be fed to the baling-chamber by the arm J and jaws J the following mechanism is employed: A pitman K is pivoted. to the gearwheel E and rocks a pivoted arm K, which arm swings in a guide-bracket K The arm K carries a sleeve K, through which passes the cranked shaft K, to the cranked portion of which is pivoted one end of a rod or link K while the other end of the said link is pivoted to the rocking armK The opposite end of the shaft K carries a suitable hay-rake A block-holder L is provided with a spring-hinge bottom L, upon which the divisional blocks L rest. The block holder is vertically slotted on its front face, as shown at L An angled lever M is pro vided with a sleeve 1V at one end, which sleeve is mounted upon. the shaft G, and the free end of said lever rests in a guideway L carried by the block-holder L, and the said guideway communicates with the slot L The disk G carries a lug M adapted to engage the lever M, and a lever N is pivoted upon the block-holder L and bears upon the lever M for the purpose of throwing the same into the path of the lug M A curved arm 0 is carried by the truckframe and extends above the lever M, and a spring 0 is connected to the said lever, and also to the arm 0.
The operation of the baling-press is as fol lows: The disk G is oscillated by the pitman F, and a similar movement is imparted to the plunger-rod H and plunger H. It will benoted that the pivotal points are so arranged that a short movement of the crank portion F will produce a considerable movement of the pivotal point connecting the disk G and the pitman F and resulting in a consequent rapid movement of the plunger H at the commencement of its stroke. As the plunger advances into the baling-chamber the pitman F and the plunger-rod H will approach the lines of their dead-centers, and the movement of the plunger will become slower as the resistance to compression of the material being baled increases. The hayrake K operated from the gear-wheel E, will deliver the hay or other material to the hopper, and it will be forced into the balingchamber by the feeder-arm J in the usual manner. The spring J forms a cushion for the feeder-arm J, so that the same will not become broken should any hard foreign matter be mixed with the material baled. hen
'a sufllcient amount of material has been pressed to form a bale and a divisional block is to be inserted, the same is dropped into the block-holder L, where it is held by the bottom L until the proper time has arrived for its use, and to force it into position into the baling-chamber the lever N is thrown over against the lever M, throwing the same into alinement with the slot L and into the path of the lug M which strikes the lever M and forces it downwardlyin the slot, and as the free end of the lever bears upon the block the bottom L is forced open and the block driven into position.
Having thus fully described my invention,

A baling-press comprising a plunger, a disk, a plunger-rod, pivotally connected to the plunger and to the disk, a feeder-arm pivotally connected to the disk, means for automatically bringing material to be baled into position to be operated upon by the feeder-arm, a divisional block-holder, means for discharging the block from the holder, means carried by the said disk for operating the block-discharging means, and means for alternately giving a partial rotation 'to the disk in opposite directions.
