Be it known thatL'THoMAs 0. SMITH, aciti zen of the United States, residing at Berkeley Springs, in the county of Morgan and State of WestVirginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baling-Presses; and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of'the invention, such'asQwill enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same.
My invention relates to improvements in baling-presses; and its object is to provide a device of this character which is particularly adapted to be driven by steam or other like power and which has novel means for transmitting motion from the power-shaft to the plunger of the press.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of a com pressing-chamber having an inlet inthe top thereof and provided with a reciprocating plu nger mount-v ed within suitable guides. A toggle is con-' nected at opposite ends to the plunger and a fixed portion of the press, and this toggle is adapted to be alternately raised and lowered constructions and combinations of parts here-- inafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims. v
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred form of my invention.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete baling-press. Fig. 2 is acentralvertical longitudinal section therethrough and showing by dotted lines one of the; positions adapted to be assumed by the plunger and the parts connected thereto.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a base mounted on suitable sills 2, and upon one end of this base is formed Specification of Letters Patent.

Parallel standards 8 extend from one of the sills 2, near the inlet end of thecompressionchamber, and these standards are connected to the walls of said compression-chamber by parallel guides ,9, between which is mounted a cross-head 10. This cross-head is provided adjacent its ends with grooves 11, which enlongitudinal movement of the cross-head. A

The other member 17 of this toggle is pivoted between ears 18, secured to one end of the base 1, and the two members are secured together by a pivot-pin 19, which also serves to hold in place a yoke 20; A cross-rod 21 is secured within the upper ends of standards 8 and constitutes a fulcrum for a beam 22, which extends above the inlet 4=and has a feed-block 23' secured toit and adapted to project outward into the inlet. A strap 24 is secured to'the lower surface of beam 22 and is slidably engaged by the yoke 20, hereinbefore referred to.. v
An angular strap 25 is secured to the toggle member 17 at a point between its ends, and mounted between this strap and said member is a sliding block 26, throug'h which extends afcrank 27, formed with a shaft- 28. This shaft is journaled in standards 29 and has gears 30 at its ends which mesh'with gears v 31, secured to a shaft 32, journaled in the upper ends of standards 29. A pulley 33 is also secured to shaft 32 and is adapted to receive motion from an engine or other motor by means of abelt. -(Not shown.)
By the particular arrangement of feed mechanism and plunger-operating device the block 23 will, as is obvious, move downward each time the plunger 12 is drawn toward its power mechanism, and each time this plunger is pressed inward the feed-block will be raised. By filling the hopper or inlet 4 with straw or other material to be baled and rotating the shaft 32 the shaft 28 will be rotatedand crank 27 will cause block 26 to reciprocate upon member 17, and during each downward stroke of the crank the toggle will be extended and will press the plunger 12 inward, at the same time pulling the feed-block 23 upward. Any material in the path of the plunger will of course be pressed forward. As the crank 27 travels upward during the completion of its first rotation the toggle will be retracted, so as to draw the plunger 12 out of the compression-chamber, and at the same time the feed-block 23 will swing downward on the material within the inlet and press it into the path of the plunger. With this mechanism it will be seen that material will be quickly fed automatically to the compression-chamber and will be thoroughly compressed by the reciprocating plunger. The pow-er mechanism employed is extremely simple, durable, and inexpensive, and as it is formed of very few parts it will not easily get out of order.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a baling-press the combination with a compression-chamber having an inlet; of a plunger, guides extending from the compression-chamber, a cross-head mounted upon the guides and connected to the plunger, a toggle pivoted at opposite ends to the cross-head and to a stationary portion of the press, a yoke extending from the intermediate pivot of the toggle, a pivoted beam mounted above the plunger, a feed-block at one end thereof, a strap at the other end engaging the yoke, a rotary shaft, and means operated by the shaft for alternately extending and retracting the toggle.
2. In a bailing-press the cornbinationwith a compression-chamber having an inlet; of a plunger, guides extending from the compression-chamber, a cross-head mounted upon the guides and connected to the plunger, a toggle pivoted at opposite ends to the cross-head and to a stationary portion of the press, a yoke extending from the intermediate pivot of the toggle, a pivoted beam mounted above the plunger, a feed-block at one end thereof, a strap at the other end engaging the yoke, a
rotary crank-shaft, a block slidably mounted upon one member of the toggle and engaged by the crank-shaft, and means for rotating the crank-shaft.
