Abstract

1839. Tarrant, K. J. July 23. Crushers with vibrating jaws; cracking nuts. -In a machine of the roller and pivoted-jaw type for cracking or crushing nuts or other hard substances, the pivoted end of the jaw is moved bodily away from the roller to permit of discharge of the crushed material. The nuts &c. pass intermittently from a hopper 30 to the roller 21 and are cracked between the roller and the curved jaw 12, which is pivotally connected at its lower end 12<a> to arms 13 on a shaft 14 and oscillated through links 11, levers 8, and arms 7 from eccentrics 6 on the driving-shaft 3, the pivots 12a being moved bodily away from the roller after the cracking operation by a cam 16 engaging a counterweighted arm 15 on the shaft 14. For arresting the feed during the cracking operation, an arm 26 on the shaft 27 of the feed-shutter 28 is adjustably connected to a link 25 pivoted tu one arm 23 of a loose lever on the shaft 14, the other arm 22 being operated by a cam 24 on the shaft 3. The crushing-roller 21 is preferably eccentric on the shaft 19 and is driven by spur or sprocket gearing from the shaft 3. The jaw and roller are fluted or corrugated. The rods 7 are provided with turn-buckles 31 to allow the position of the jaw relatively to the roller to be varied, and the degree of oscillation of the jaw can be regulated by changing the points of connexion of the rods 7 with the levers 8.
