Toothed gearing.-In helical toothed reduction gearing for use with high-speed turbines, directcurrent generators, or centrifugal pumps, one of the shafts is carried by bearings supported by series of sleeves or plates, which are separated by thin films of oil &c. under pressure, so as to permit slight movement of the shaft to allow resilient engagement of the teeth. The driving-shaft 8, Figs. 1 and 3, carries pinions 9, 10 gearing with pinions 2, 3 on the driven shaft 4 and is carried in bearing-bushes 14. Bearing-sleeves 22 have spherical centres 23 engaging the casing 7, and between the sleeves 22 and bushes 14 are arranged series of tubular sleeves 18, 19, 20 provided with oil-holes 21. Oil or other liquid is pumped or forced into the bearings so as to form thin films between the tubular sleeves and permit automatic adjustment of the gearing. Adjustable struts 26, 27, 28 may be provided to permit movement of the shaft 8 only in a plane at right-angles to the plane containing the axles of the shafts 8, 4. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the bushes are formed in two parts 32, 33 fitting within a bearing-sleeve 35, flat plates 34 being arranged above and below the bushes and being cushioned by oil &c. under pressure as before. A series of helically-toothed wheels or pinions may be employed in place of each of the pinions 9, 10 and wheels 2, 3.
