Tell-tale apparatus.-A float B in a. ship's hold, the tank of a floating dock, or other receptacle is attached to a chain C having a counterweight D and moving over a sprocket E. As the float rises, it turns the screwed spindle I by means of the chain and bevel-gearing, thereby moving a contact-maker M associated with resistances L to affect the reading of a volt-meter Q. The float may have the shape of an inverted cone, which, if enclosed in a tube, is provided with vertical notches for the free passage of water. The switch and gear may be enclosed in a box filled with oil.
