5758. Humphris, F. March 6. [Cognate Application, 13,131/14.] Vices. - Adjustable spanners, wrenches, vices or like tools, have their jaws, which are preferably of laminated construction, mounted to open in parallel manner by means of two sets of coupling links, one set of which has two or more pairs of parallel links having their outer ends pivoted to the jaws and their inner ends pivoted to a slide adjustable within a handle or fixed body part of the tool, and the other set consists of links pivoted at one end to the jaws and at the other end to the fixed part or handle of the tool. The first set of links f have their outer ends pivoted to the jaws j and their inner ends to a sliding piece b, and the second set of links g are pivoted to the lower part of the jaws j and also to side ears a<1> formed on the two halves of the handle a. The links f and g may either have integral shouldered pivot pins f<1> or may be perforated to have shouldered gudgeons riveted in position. To operate the linksto open or close the jaws j, the sliding guide-plates b are moved longitudinally by a screwed rod c, c<1> riveted to them at c<2>, c<3> and operated by a nut d which is fixed by a set-screw to an outer milled sleeve e rotatable on the handle. The nut d has circular ridges d<2> engaging corresponding recesses in the handle a so that 'the nut shall only rotate in respect to the handle a. A cap e<2> fits within flanges c<4> and a shoulder c<5> on the milled sleeve c. The jaws and the ears a<1> of the half handle parts a are separated by distance pieces h either of washer or of gudgeon form. The jaws plates j may be of integral construction with the parts j<5>, or these may be make up pieces riveted thereto. The jaws may be made from sheet metal; or they may be made from T-section material and have the links on each side of the vertical line of the T-section piece. The guideplate b may be formed of one flat piece only reduced and threaded at the end. The links f, g may be arranged in laminated form using distance pieces.
