Ratchet wrenches; wrench handles and shanks.- Ratchet spanners of the open-jaw type comprise a number of displaceable handle-members adapted to embrace a removable rotatable member actuated by spring-controlled pawls arranged on the handle members, which latter are locked rigidly together while the rotatable member is actuated. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the rotatable member D has outside circular bearing-surfaces D<2>, straight or curved ratchet-teeth D', and a nut aperture D<3> arranged with the centre C of the circular bearing-surfaces nearer its inner closed end to provide clearance for the corners of the nut within the jaws B of the handle members A, which are made preferably of sheet metal, pivoted together at A, and provided with pins or stops F, spring-controlled or otherwise arranged to hold the jaws closed when the spanner is in use. Two spring-pressed pawls E are provided for continuous operation of the ring D. For reversal of the direction of movement, the ratchet rings and pawls at the two ends of the spanner may be oppositely arranged, or the pawls may be double-ended and the teeth D<1> appropriately constructed, or the teeth and pawls may be in duplicate and arranged opposite to each other. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the jaws are at rightangles to the axial line of the spanner, the bar H carrying the jaw I having pivoted to it at G<1> a link G arranged to abut the end of the sleeve K<1> as shown in full lines to bring the jaws I and K together for holding the ring D.
