Abstract

5522. Whitehead & Co. April 12, 1913, [Convention date]. Driving and transmission mechanism, special applications of.-Relates to turbine-driven torpedoes in which a pair of co-axial shafts are coupled to the turbines by reduction gearing. According to the invention, a pair of turbinewheels are located in planes parallel to the longitudinal axis of the torpedo, and each one is coupled by a bevel-pinion to a pair of hemispherical bevel-wheels, fast one with each shaft. As shown in Fig. 1, parallel turbine-wheels a rotating in opposite directions are mounted on shafts c, d turning in bearings e, f. These shafts carry bevel-pinions g, h, gearing with toothed rings i, n, mounted respectively on hemispherical bodies j, o integral respectively with the shafts k, p of the propellers m, q. The injection nozzles r, Fig. 2, of the turbines are supplied with fluid through a pipe s passing through the gap between the rings i, n.
