Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-In a coinfreed gas meter, a lever l actuated by the quantity mechanism k to open and close the supply valve n is attached to a flexible membrane m, serving to seal the opening in the wall of the valve-chamber, and is mounted in bearings q in line with the membrane. By this arrangement, the movement of the lever l necessary to operate the valve produces but slight deformation of the membrane. The membrane n is gripped between two screwed parts fitted in the opening in the chamber. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) comprises also an arrangement in which the lever l is provided with a spherical enlargement working in bearings in the wall of the chamber so that the lever can move in all directions, the membrane m being attached to this enlargement; also an arrangement stated to be well known in which the membrane is attached to the valve spindle adjacent the valve closure, but this construction is stated to be objectionable owing to the excessive deformation of the membrane. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
