Chlor-, brom-, and other halogenated phenol esters are prepared by treating esters of phenol homologues with chlorine, bromine, &c. or agents capable of producing these substances, at temperatures below 100‹ C. and in presence of actinic radiations. Halogen-carriers may also be present. The halogen enters the side chain, but, in the absence of light, compounds halogenated in the nucleus result. In examples, the preparation is described of #-dichlor-o- and p-cresolcarbonates, #-trichlor-o-cresolcarbonate, #-monochlor-p-cresolplosphate, #-dichlor-o-cresolphosphate, and #-dichlor-o-cresolbenzenesulphonate. The preparation in the absence of light of chlor- and brom-phenyl acetates, and p-chlor-m-cresolchlorbenzoate is also described, The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) describes also the treatment of benzoyl-m-cresol with chlorine in the presence of phosphorus pentachloride and light, whereby # -mono- and -trichlor-m-cresolbenzoates result. and also the preparation of #-monochlor-o-cresolcarbonate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Amines, oxyhydrobenzamides, oxybenzylideneamines, and oxynitriles result by treatment of the phenolic esters halogenated in the side chain, with ammonia and amines. Oxybenzylalcohols, oxybenzaldehydes, and oxybenzoic acids result by saponifying the halogenated esters with alcoholic caustic alkali.
