Abstract
1960. British Thomson-Houston Co., [General Electric Co.]. Jan. 24. Safety-valves.-A valve device for preventing excessive pressure in a compressed-air reservoir of the type in which an auxiliary valve actuated by the pressure in the reservoir controls the opening and closing of a valve adapted to put the compressor cylinder in communication with the atmosphere, has the auxiliary valve arranged to open with a ' pop ' action. The main valve 10. which is normally held to its seat by a spring 12, is adapted to be actuated by a screwed spindle 14 or by a piston. 13. Reservoir pressure is admitted to the auxiliary valve casing by a pipe 6 and, when the auxiliary valve is open, passes through a restriction 26<b> and pipe 8 provided with a bleed-hole 32 to the upper side of the piston 13. The auxiliary valve 27 is normally held to its seat by fluid pressure admitted through a port 31 and has a lost-motion connexion with a spring-loaded actuating-diaphragm 17, The reservoir pressure acts on the diaphragm against the action of the spring 23, and of the fluid pressure on the back of the valve member to open the pilot and main valves when the pressure exceeds a predetermined maximum.
