Foundations.-Relates to road foundations of the type in which constructional framework is placed below the road surface, and consists in employing frames made up of longitudinal and transverse girders of ferro - concrete or the like, to form abutments for a sub-crust of road metal, which is rammed into position with or without a binder. In the form shown in Figs. 2 and 3, a series of frames a, b is laid in train on a suitably excavated road-bed, and the usual foundation c is rounded to a suitable convexity in each frame. Above this is laid a sub-crust d of tarred broken stone or slag, or of material having a cementitious matrix, and a top crust d' of tar-macadam rests on this. The frames are made of ferro-concrete or other suitable material, and their sides a, b may be integral with, or separate from, one another. The longitudinal members a may be curved, and the transverse members b may be in sections having eyes i, Fig. 10, for the reception of a bolt h.
