Portable writing-desks. - Relates to portable writing-desks, sketching-boxes, &c. of the kind provided with a hinged lid which serves as a writing-slope when fully open and resting on a table &c. According to the invention, a ledge for the support of a book &c. is fixed to, forms part of, or is hinged to, the outer side of the lid or box at or near the hinge connecting the lid to the box, so that the lid may also serve as a reading-desk or easel when supported at an acute angle to the box. In the form shown in Fig. 1. the ledge e is integral with the lid a, and hinged struts f are provided to support the lid. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the ledge e is hinged to the lid a, and an inner lid 5 is provided for use as a reading-desk or easel when the lid a is being used as a writing-slope. The lid 5 is supported by struts 13 and may be provided with a hinged extension. The struts 13 may also be used for supporting the lid a when the lid 5 is closed, or the lid a may be supported on the erected lid 5 or on the raised lid v of the pen tray or the like r. The inner lid may be hinged to the back of the box, in which case it may be hollow to contain stationery &c. In the construction shown in Fig. 12, the booksupporting ledge 28 is integral with the box, the hinges 29 being constructed so that the edge of the lid clears the ledge 28 when the lid is opened.
