Joint-making packing. - Packing-disks are formed by winding asbestos, cotton, flax, or other fibre in the form of strands or a cord between a fixed flange and a movable flange on a bobbin. A number of disks may be wound on the bobbin, the disks previously wound forming one abutment, and the movable flange the other abutment. Wire may be incorporated with the fibre, or a wire core may be used which may be covered with fibre or fabric, or metal barbs may be fixed on the fibres. The strands or cord may be impregnated with a solution of rubber, gutta-percha, balata, &c. before winding. After winding, the rings are pressed. Two or more rings may be pressed in a mould and vulcanized to form one packing- ring. Rubber or other solution may be applied between the rings.
