Clutches, friction.- Clutch linings are produced by forming on a bobbin between end plates a mass winding composed of cotton, ramie, flax, silk, wool, asbestos, or other yarn, which has been impregnated with a binding and hardening-agent such as phenol formaldehyde condensation product, drying and heating the mass, and cutting it transversely to the required form. The spool may be axially compressed before hardening. As shown, the wound mass a, consisting of yarn evenly laid-up under tension and preferably twisted or plaited to give it strength, is compressed by a movable end plate d in a cylinder c, which is preferably split longitudinally to facilitate the introduction of the spool. The hardened mass is then cut into washers for cluches &c. By the use of an obliquely-set parting-tool, the spool may be cut on the lathe into conical or V-section rings. According to one Provisional Specification, a solution of india-rubber, gutta-percha, or balata may be used as a binder; the yarn may be wound between perforated end plates on a perforated bobbin and subsequently impregnated; a number of lengths of yarn may be wound in parallel to the full width of the bobbin; and the winding may be carried beyond the finished diameter to. allow for trueing-up.
