Abstract
24,835. Eley, T. W. Oct. 31. Portable turning-apparatus; tools.-A portable device for cutting off and turning lengths of rods or tubes from rotating stock, consists of two arms mounted on a hollow pivot, one arm adapted to engage the work and the other to carry the cutters. The device may be entirely hand supported, or may be clamped to a slide rest after being properly positioned. The arm 1 carries a bearing 3 which has a split extension 5 adapted to be clamped by a screw 7 to enclose removable tubes 4 through which the work passes. The hollow pivot 8 encloses a rod 9 to which is fixed an adjustable stop 10, the centre of which is slightly eccentric to the centre of the work, and carries a disk parting-cutter 12 and other disk tools 18 if required. The cutters have one or more cut-away portions ending in cutting-points 14 which, in the case of parting tools, reach just beyond the centre of the work so that work of any diameter can be completely severed. The tool is placed on the rotating work held in a lathe, and, after positioning, the arm 2 is rotated against the action of a spring 16 until the work is severed, a stop 17 being provided to limit the depth of cut when other tools are used.
